PDM says Government’s plan on Covid-19 needs overhaul

The official opposition in the Namibian National Assembly, the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), says the Namibian Government under the ruling Swapo Party shows a complete lack of organisation skills at all levels to develop an action plan to combat Covid-19.
“It is the PDM’s opinion that the government’s handling of the crisis thus far shows a complete lack of organisational skills at all levels”, states the Party’s Treasurer-General, Nico Smit, in a press statement. Smit added the PDM requests Government to go back to the drawing board.
The PDM further requests Government to start testing for the Coronavirus on a larger scale and on a continuous basis, as advised by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The Namibian public’s right to have access to information regarding the safety of health workers and the availability of adequate medical supplies is also touched. The PDM further demands more transparency around the stimulus package to support the economy, as announced by the Finance Minister, Ipumbu Shiimi last week. Like most countries globally the lockdown against Covid-19 is placing businesses at all levels under threat.
Employment and the number of jobs that have been lost and will be lost as well as the effect on small and medium enterprises as a result of the lockdown because of Covid-19.
The PDM requests the Trade and Industrialisation Minister, Lucia Iipumbu to explain why NamPol officers are denying the entry of building materials to areas outside the restricted areas, despite in many instances the building materials are essential items and truck drivers carry the necessary permits to transport these items.
The PDM also wants to know the way forward with regard to education. The Party is of opinion the Ministry of Education has so far not made available clear guidance on the thousands of students who are sitting at home and losing valuable schooling time.
