Six men arrested by flying squad members for hijacked vehicle and illegal possession of lobster tails

WESTERN CAPE – Maitland Flying Squad members strategically deployed to do crime prevention patrols on the R300, saw a Honda Ballade driving past recklessly. Members tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped off. Police gave chase and vehicle went through a wall on corner of Old Paarl Road and the R300, Brackenfell thereby coming to a stop. Three suspects, aged 18, 23 and 25 were arrested. Upon searching the vehicle police found an imitation firearm and later discovered that the car was reported as hijacked in Phillipi East.

In another incident, Maitland Flying Squad members followed up on information in Grassy Park, pulled over a vehicle and conducted a search. Members found 1106 lobster tails in the vehicle worth an estimated street value of R11060-00. Three suspects aged 21, 24 and 29 were arrested for possession of lobster tails.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

Five people arrested in Gauteng for impersonations

Gauteng police have arrested five people in the past few days for impersonating a police officer, soldier and emergency service employee.
A 25-year-old man with dreadlocks was arrested in Heidelberg for impersonating a member of SANDF and possession of stolen property after he was found walking in the CBD wearing full SANDF uniform on Sunday, 26 April 2020. Members of the community found it unusual when they saw the man with dreadlocks in full army uniform walking along Voortrekker Street and they alerted the police. Upon interviewing the man, police established that he is not a member of SANDF. He was arrested and charged with impersonating a member of SANDF and possession of suspected stolen property.
In Johannesburg, again on Sunday, a 40-year-old man was arrested after he was found driving a vehicle fitted with red lights and siren. When stopped, the suspect could not produce proof that he is an emergency service employee. As police were searching the car, they found an unlicensed firearm with ammunition as well as traffic cones belonging to South African Police Service. He was arrested for impersonating an emergency service employee, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property.
In Tshwane, on Wednesday, 22 April 2020 a former reservist and two of her accomplices were arrested for impersonating police officers and common robbery. Police received information about two women who are wearing police uniform and a man who had just committed a common robbery. A lookout for the suspects was conducted. A vehicle matching the description given was spotted and stopped in Soshanguve. Upon questioning the occupants, it was established that one female is a former police reservist while the other female and male were just members of the community. Inside the vehicle there were police uniforms, unwritten police docket, trays of eggs and chickens. The suspects were charged with impersonating police officers, possession of suspected stolen property and common robbery.
Investigation is underway to establish how the suspects acquired uniforms and property that belongs to the police and the army. Further charges may be added to all the suspects, pending the investigation.
The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela applauded the police and community who acted with diligence to intercept the suspects. "It is a very serious offence to impersonate a law enforcement officer. These suspects deserve a hefty sentence that will send a strong message to other criminals who tarnish the names of the hard working law enforcers and emergency service employees" said the Provincial Commissioner.
The suspects will appear in magistrates’ courts in due course.

MAYOR MASINA TO CONTRIBUTE ONE THIRD OF HIS MONTHLY SALARY TO SOLIDARITY FUND FOR THE NEXT THREE MONTHS

Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina announced last night (9 April) that he will donate 33% of his monthly salary to the country’s Solidarity Fund over the next three months.
In addition to Mayor Masina’s pledge, senior officials of the City of Ekurhuleni will contribute the following percentages of their salaries to the fund over the next three months:
- City Manager - 33%
- Group Chief Financial Officer – 33%
- Members of the Mayoral Committee – 25%
- Speaker of Council – 20%
- Chief Whip of Council – 15%

Discussions are under way to heads of departments to donate a 25% contribution over the three months, divisional heads 12,5% and officials 5%. The outcomes of these discussions will be communicated as they are concluded.

This discussion comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the 14-day extension of the nation-wide lockdown and the decision by himself, his cabinet and all Provincial Premiers to donate 33% of their salaries to the country’s Solidarity Fund.

“We must all heed the call made by President Ramaphosa for us to rise to the occasion and live up to his national Thuma Mina moment. Every effort and gesture we can make as citizens will go far in assisting efforts to flatten the curve.”

“We welcome the 14-day nation-wide lockdown extension. Indeed now is not the time to relax, our struggle against the invisible enemy must be intensified. The City of Ekurhuleni will continue to work in collaboration with both Provincial and National spheres of government in combating the COVID-19 global pandemic,” said Mayor Masina.

SUSPECTED COVID-19 PATIENT DIES IN KOBOKO

A coronavirus suspected patient has died in quarantine in Koboko district.

The suspect was picked up on Saturday by Koboko District surveillance medical team from her home after developing Covid-19 signs and symptoms such as general body weakness, sore throat, and headache. She passed on before her results were released.

Dr Denis Oloya, the acting District Health Officer, said the woman was picked up from her home in Arabanga Village, Degimba Parish after getting information from the locals.

“On Saturday, the team after getting the information, we were able to arrange the laboratory team, the chipping equipment and transport to go and pick the suspect in her home; we picked her samples and sent to Uganda Virus Institute. But unfortunately, she died in her room,” he said.

Dr Oloya said to avoid risks and exposing people to the suspect, whose status have not yet been known, the medical burial team took it up to bury the body and all those (five in number) who were in close contact with her have been picked up and isolated.

Tracing from her previous health history, Dr Oloya said the woman had a miscarriage some weeks before. “This is why she could have developed some complications after having miscarriage,” he added.

He, however, expressed concern over the continuous entry of foreigners from neighbouring countries such as South Sudan, and DR Congo through some of the ungazetted borderlines which he says will put lives of people at risk.

Currently, Koboko District is isolating 11 people, two of which are Covid-19 suspects. So far, one of the results came out negative. Three Congolese, one south Sudanese and five others came in close contact with the deceased.

Capt Yahaya Kakooza, the Resident District Commissioner, called for calmness among the locals as the district health team and leaders still wait for the results from Uganda Virus Institute.

Uganda has so far confirmed 52 cases of coronavirus and more tests are being carried.

South Africa’s confirmed Coronavirus infections near 2 000 people with 18 fatalities.
Ramaphosa explained although the infection rate is within manageable measures, the extension of the lockdown is necessary to prevent at all costs the Coronavirus infections to reach pandemic levels.
It was understood from the address by President Ramaphosa, the extension of the lockdown will not influence the current arrangements with regard to the export of South African consumer products and essential products to Namibia
