Understanding the strength of the Ugandan ecomomy during Amin.
During the Amin days, $1 US dollar was maintained at 7/= Uganda shillings. Today one dollar is at 3,300/= Museveni shillings.
Basically you need 500 Museveni shillings to buy 1 Amin shilling.
Yet if we include adjustment for inflation, a dollar from the 1970's, is actually at $6.27 in today's dollar
And since as explained at the start, the dollar was at 7/= Uganda Shillings, this means that the Amin currency was equal to todays US dollar.
The latest Samsung Smartphone that is sold at 2,500,000/= Museveni Shillings today, would be at only 750 Amin shillings.
If you check the price in America, that's exactly the same amount in dollars that the Samsung smartphone goes for.
The bus fare from Kampala to Jinja which is at 5,000/= Shillings today, was actually 50 cents (half a shilling) with Uganda Transport Company.
Therefore inflation was stabilized, and the currency was stronger. The best indication that during the Amin days, the Ugandan economy was robust.
Samuel Francis Kasajja Hussein Lumumba recalls experiences he went thru during during his father's regime. I just imagine at that young age he was able to comprehend so much he is passing on. Are these facts or fiction? Comparing today and Amin era, a lot has changed.
