Ex-VP Bukenya Wants Museveni To Rule For Life

Uganda's former vice president Prof Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya has urged Parliament to enact a law enabling President Museveni to rule for life.

In an exclusive interview with the tri-weekly Observer newspaper, the former Busiro North MP said there should be an exception for Museveni, 72, whom he described as "the founder of the nation who deserves special treatment".

Bukenya told the newspaper Museveni "has put in a lot of effort; so, we can have a clause for him." "I would let him [Museveni] be a special something and lead until his time comes,” he added.

However, Bukenya said subsequent presidents should adhere to the 75-age limit enshrined in the constitution. The limit is the only constitutional hurdle that stands in the way of Museveni extending his three-decade grip on power.

“As far as President Museveni is concerned, let him continue. He has good ideas, but as a principle for subsequent leaders, there must be an age-limit,” Bukenya said.

Bukenya, 67, likened Museveni to Mahathir Mohamad, the Malaysian politician who was the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2003, making him the longest-serving holder of that office.
