German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she’d make ‘essentially the same decisions’ if presented with the circumstances of the 2015 migrant crisis again.

‘When people are standing at the German-Austrian border or the Hungarian-Austrian border, they have to be treated like human beings,’ she told journalists.

Merkel’s handling of the crisis was a critical point in her tenure as chancellor. Nearly a million refugees applied for asylum in Germany between 2015 and 2016.

Initially, Merkel’s open-borders immigration policy was widely supported by the German people. However, there has been increased criticism following highly publicized criminal incidents involving migrants, including the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack, which killed 12.
