HISTORIC VICTORY: ABER KAWAS BECOMES THE FIRST PALESTINIAN AMERICAN ELECTED TO NEW YORK'S STATE LEGISLATURE
NEW YORK, USA – November 4, 2026
Aber Kawas has made history after winning a seat in the New York State Senate, becoming the first Palestinian American elected to New York's state legislature.
Kawas, a Palestinian American community organiser from Queens, secured victory in the November 3 elections, marking a significant milestone for Palestinian and Muslim American political representation in the United States.
Her victory follows a successful Democratic primary campaign in June, where she defeated incumbent Assemblymember Steven Raga to secure the party's nomination for Senate District 12.
Backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and progressive political organisations, Kawas campaigned on issues including affordable housing, workers' rights, healthcare, immigration reform and Palestinian rights.
Her election represents a historic moment for Palestinian Americans, demonstrating the growing presence of diverse communities in American political institutions.
Kawas is expected to take office in January 2027, where she will represent communities in Queens and participate in legislative decisions affecting millions of New Yorkers.
Her victory adds a new chapter to the history of minority representation in American politics.
