REMARKS AT THE LAUNCHING CEREMONY OF PEOPLE POWER/NUP FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

REMARKS AT THE LAUNCHING CEREMONY OF PEOPLE POWER/NUP FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

Aisha Kabanda | August 25, 2020

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you for coming.

Today, we are here to launch our fundraising campaign. This is in line with the Political Party and Organizations Act and the Presidential Elections Act. As you are aware, the Chief Fundraiser of any campaign is the candidate.

On Friday 22/08/2020 our colleague, friend, brother or fada as you may call him, whom I call Mr. President Hon. Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert gracefully accepted to carry the NUP presidential flag for and on behalf of the many Ugandans aspiring for change. Thus, he is the Chief fundraiser for this election. I will therefore, at an opportune time invite him to officially launch our fundraising campaign. But before then allow me to make the following remarks.

This struggle for change is not a single man’s business but for all that desire change. We are endowed with unique abilities and qualities therefore we can play different roles but all geared at fostering change of national leadership. Some people are good spokespersons just like comrade Joel Senyonyi; others are good activists just like my brother Segirinya, others are good organizers just like comrade Kidandala; while others can sacrifice their whole in other terms known as kuyiwawo mubiri.

We are also endowed with different resources; some have the stamina to confront our opponents in any way and have the time to do such a good job they have done, while other are endowed with logistical and financial resources but do not have either the stamina time or liberty as some are employed in sensitive public and private positions that demand to be seen as apolitical. A synergy of these advantages is which we look forward to fostering.

We therefore make this call to all brothers and sisters that are not able to physically participate with us as we push for change to contribute by raising funds to facilitate the struggle. No amount of money is too little for us therefore any amount of money counts. You may also contribute in kind for example in form of services, T-shirts, fuel, vehicles, motorcycles, to mention but a few.

Friends, the young men and women that traverse this country sensitizing the communities and popularizing our symbol that is the Umbrella, need airtime, data, transport, accommodation food and water. The many that are arrested need to be bailed out at exorbitant fees designed by the State just to weaken us. Thanks to the lawyers that have offered pro bono (free) service but also need fuel to reach the courts and other basic costs.

Many of our colleagues have been injured by state operatives, some in accidents and have to be treated. Others have not been lucky to survive the wrath of the dictator or fate, but the livelihood of their families must continue. There are enormous challenges that the foot soldiers go through but they are determined to carry on until we wear the victor’s crown. We pray that the rest of us who cannot play the role that they play facilitate the struggle by providing logistics. This campaign is a visual campaign we therefore need a lot of branding; poster, billboards, banners, T-shirts, caps, airspace on radios, televisions and internet to mention but a few. This campaign needs a lot fuel to be able to reach people in their respective villages. In short, this so-called scientific campaign needs a lot of money.

To illustrate;

Uganda has 68,733 villages, and assuming that we have only 5 foot soldiers in every village, working only 4 days a week in the remaining 22 weeks to elections, giving each one them 20,000/ to cater for all the expenses they would encounter including up keep for their homes while on duty, this would be equivalent to: 604,850,400,000 yet it is only one activity. This is meant to encourage us to do more. The people we are competing with spend from our national coffers spending tax payers money and misappropriation of debts taken on our behalf for our children and grandchildren to pay in future. While they desire to renew their tenure to make another loot of our hard-earned money, we must spend everything that is left to us to salvage our country from heartless people and build a foundation for a better future.

Our strength and hope is in our numbers and that is why we say; People Power is Our Power. Raising the money we need to defeat the junta is not rocket science but just commitment from each one of us. There are 17,782,594 registered voters. We already told you we are going to defeat President Museveni by 80%. Using a conservative approach, we estimate that 30% of the voters will not respond to our fundraising probably because they do not support us or are simply too poor to contribute anything. This will leave us with approximately 12.5m who will respond to our fundraising.

We assume that;
1m will contribute at least 500,000
1m will contribute at least 300,000
3m people will contribute at least 100,000
7.5m people will contribute at least 10,000

This will lead to a collection of at least Shs.1.175trillion. This is only local contribution. Putting into consideration of other forms of fundraising we are hopeful that we shall be able to raise the funds that need to push us to success.

I am therefore here to inform Ugandans that an uphill task can be made easy if we all individually play a part that we can. Together we can send the dictatorship packing, decisively. And wear the victor’s crown.

I make one promise. Every penny you contribute will be put to the use it was meant for.

We shall be transparent, rigorous in accounting, frugal in spending but considerate in the welfare of our party, task force and movement workers at all levels.

Thank you once again for accepting our invitation to this event. You don’t know how important this means to us.
